After
Goldeneye, gamers waited for an announcement on the new 007 movie
"Tomorrow Never Dies." Unfortunately, Rareware and Nintendo lost out
on the license to "Tomorrow Never Dies" to MGM. MGM made
"Tomorrow Never Dies" for the Playstation and that was the
end of it.
This could actually be a good thing for Rareware. Now, they have the
freedom to create a completely unique game. Rareware has even been
shifting much of their programming staff to completing Perfect Dark.
Some Rareware employees are saying Perfect Dark is Rareware's most
ambitious project ever. Judging from Rareware's past work well Perfect
Dark could be one of the best games ever.
To really have a good idea what Perfect Dark will be like you have
to play Goldeneye. Goldeneye was not just a regular old first person
shooter, it was a first person shooter with A LOT of replay value
and kick-ass graphics. Replay value is not something you find in many
first person shooters do the fact they all have you doing the same
exact thing over and over again. Goldeneye has so many factors that
contribute to replay value that you might as well read our review
to see. Check out the Goldeneye
review.
The tech heads at Rareware
completely redesigned Goldeneye's engine and came up with one of
the best looking on the Nintendo 64. Perfect Dark shows that the
Nintendo 64 is capable of quite a bit if you take the time to learn
the hardware. Perfect Dark is a sneak peak at the Nintendo 64's
second generation of games. With all the complexity in the game,
it will almost surely use the RAM Expansion. Together with all of
its detailed polygonal models and lighting effects, Perfect Dark
takes the word "atmosphere" on the Nintendo 64 to a new level. Almost
EVERYTHING in the game is light sourced. There are glares, light
seeping through cracks, objects casting shadows, everything. This
kind of detail has to be mentioned. Most of the time, developers
do not take the time for "trivial" things such as these. Rareware
has definitely learned how to use the Nintendo 64's polygonal power
efficiently.
All the characters in
Perfect Dark are smooth and seamless. Most of the environments themselves
are not too complex, but they are made up of huge texture mapped
and fully light sourced so most won't even have the nerve to complain.
Now onto the story! Since
Perfect Dark is not based on a Bond movie, Rareware is free to do
anything they want. Perfect Dark is set in the year 2023, and you
are in control of Joanna Dark. Her code name is "Perfect Dark".
She is on the trail of some conspiracy leading back to the DataDyne
Corporation. That is about all we know at the moment. We'll keep
you informed.
