Sonic Adventure

Sonic Adventure is definitely at the top of the Dreamcast's line up. Of course, Sonic Adventure has also been in development longer than any other Dreamcast title.

Sonic Adventure basically combines every other Sonic title into one. There are all the characters, items, and much more. The series has gone into 3D extremely well, speed and all. The graphics in Sonic Adventure are the most impressive aspect of the entire game.

There is no fog, no pop-up, and the game runs at a constant 60 frames per second. This is something we are just now starting to see in console games. A lot of this can be credited to the fact that Dreamcast has so much more RAM than current consoles.

Another little treat is the game runs in a 640*480 resolution. Everything is clean, crisp, and extremely clear. With so much RAM, the textures are never blurred.

The game is composed of massive amounts of polygons. Even with all this complexity, the game never slows down. The Sonic Team in Japan has gone to great lengths to make sure that the game is perfect.

The storyline is pretty simple. Dr. Robotnik finds the weapon known as Chaos. With this new weapon he plans to conquer the World, blah blah blah. Now it is up to Sonic, Tails, Amy Rose, Knuckles, E-102 GAMMA, and BIG to save the World.

Sonic Adventure has been designed with casual and hardcore gamers in mind. There are 6 main levels, hidden levels, and other optional objectives throughout the game. Not everything has to be beaten in the game to complete, so casual gamers will not get mad and quit the game.

The hidden levels and optional objectives apply mostly to hardcore gamers since they will be the only ones with enough skill and patience to complete all of them.

You also have to use different characters for the levels they are equipped to handle. Something that requires speed would use Sonic, something for brute force would be Knuckles, something that needs the ability of flight would call upon Tails, etc. etc.

Speed in the game is a major ingredient in Sonic Adventure. Speed is what gives Sonic Adventure much of its atmosphere and defines the Sonic series. Sonic Adventure has speed, and a lot of it!! Speed Highway is definitely the fastest level in the entire game. Speed highway, however, looks semi-prerendered. This means parts of it are just backgrounds and parts are actual polygons. I can not confirm whether or not is in fact completely real time or not.

With the release of Sonic Adventure in Japan this December, it will be interesting to see how many Dreamcasts it can sell.
